Condition: Noma – an infection caused by severe malnutrition whereby the naturally occurring bacteria in the mouth destroy the facial tissues.
Operation: Facial reconstruction – using a temporalis muscle flap and skin graft – onboard Mercy Ships, Togo. At the end of November 2011 Aissa underwent the second stage noma reconstruction.
Current Needs: Aissa and her younger sister (Aissatou) live in Mouda Childrens Home and School for 9 months of the year and return to the village regularly to visit their grandmother and father.
